Formula and decision logic

A Korean residential electricity bill is the sum of a tiered base charge, progressive energy charges, 10% VAT, and a 3.7% industry fund — with relaxed tier thresholds in July and August.

Subtotal = base charge + Σ (usage in tier × tier rate)

Total bill = (subtotal × 1.137) rounded down to nearest 10 KRW

Worked examples

Off-season 300 kWh

Input: 300 kWh, regular tiers

Result: Crosses tier 2; bill includes both 120원/kWh and 214.6원/kWh segments

Summer 300 kWh

Input: 300 kWh, summer relaxation on

Result: Stays inside tier 1 (300 kWh limit), so the bill is noticeably lower

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter your monthly kWh usage
  2. 2Toggle summer relaxation in July or August
  3. 3Press Calculate to see the bill
  4. 4Check the per-tier breakdown to spot where charges climb

How to read the result

  • Most savings come from staying inside the first tier — summer relaxation effectively shifts the threshold to 300 kWh.
  • The base charge alone changes drastically between tiers (910 / 1600 / 7300 KRW), so crossing 400 kWh has an outsized impact.

Common input mistakes

  • Multiplying total usage by the highest tier rate instead of splitting per tier.
  • Forgetting to add VAT and the industry fund (≈ 13.7% on top of the subtotal).

Frequently asked questions

How is the bill structured?

Tiered base charge + progressive energy charge, then 10% VAT and 3.7% electricity industry fund.

What is summer relaxation?

In July and August the tier thresholds expand from 200/400 kWh to 300/450 kWh, lowering bills at the same usage.

Why might my real bill differ?

Mandatory-usage guarantees, multi-child or welfare discounts, time-of-use plans, and different reading dates can change the actual bill.

Can I just multiply usage by one rate?

No. Korean residential rates are progressive, so each tier of usage is billed at its own rate. The calculator splits usage by tier correctly.
